Chapter 105 – Planting Magic Class
by spirapiraChapter 105 – Planting Magic Class
North of the farmland in the Planting District, Mo Lan read the words on a wooden sign:
“North Farmland Teaching Field. That’s right — this should be where planting magic class is held!”
“This whole area?” Vasida stood on the field ridge. “It’s as big as the dormitory district, isn’t it?”
“I think so,” Sylph said. “This plot is bigger than all the others, but there really aren’t any ridges dividing it up. It’s one continuous field.”
“What crop is growing in here? It looks a bit like stunted wheat?” Iris gazed at the field full of unidentifiable green herbaceous plants, somewhat puzzled. “The wheat over there has already turned yellow. Why is this still green? Did they use Plant Magic to accelerate the growth over there?”
“I don’t think this is wheat,” Mo Lan said.
To her, it looked a bit like barnyard grass.
Here in Valen, there were also some plants quite similar to those found on Earth.
“This is hedgehog grass,” Sylph said. “A common wild grass. They say hedgehog grass is the common ancestor of both rice and wheat, which is why they look a little bit alike.”
She had heard this from her mother.
“Correct! This is hedgehog grass.”
Amisha’s voice came from above. No one had noticed when she had arrived.
She hopped off her broomstick into the teaching field and plucked a green spike of hedgehog grass.
“Long ago, when witches were fleeing persecution and hiding in mountain forests and wilderness, during times of food shortage, they would gather hedgehog grass seeds, grind them into flour, sift out the husks, and make grass cakes to stave off hunger.
However, hedgehog grass produces small grains with low yield and weak satiety — it can’t serve as a food crop.
Hedgehog grass has extremely tenacious vitality. It’s a harmful weed in fields that competes with crops for space and nutrients, so hedgehog grass in farmland must be removed promptly.”
Hearing this, Mo Lan had a sinking feeling about what was coming.
Sure enough, Amisha continued, “Farming starts with clearing the land. When you learned Culinary Magic before, you remember attuning your kitchen utensils, right?”
The young witches nodded. “We remember!”
“Before clearing land, you need to prepare your farming tools first. Now, everyone go to the tool shed over there and each pick up a watering can and a hoe to attune.” Amisha said.
The young witches looked where Amisha was pointing — the edge of the neighboring field.
There stood a squat, long earthen building.
They walked over and opened the door. Inside were all manner of oversized farming tools.
The young witches, Mo Lan included, were unfazed by now.
Witches’ kitchen utensils were all normal-sized, since one had to learn cooking before using magic to do the work.
But farming tools, cleaning tools, and the like were all oversized.
At least compared to those on Earth, they were oversized — definitely uncomfortable for a normal-sized person to use by hand.
The reason they were oversized was that these tools weren’t meant to be used manually. After all, even lifting them was a struggle. Using magic to control and operate them — that was how witches worked.
Larger farming tools meant higher efficiency.
The Cleaning Tool Cards Mo Lan had made also contained mostly oversized cleaning tools, though there were also some smaller ones specifically designed for cleaning nooks and crannies.
The watering cans in the tool shed had bodies like small water vats, with shower heads nearly the size of washbasins.
Although they were made of aluminum and quite light, their sheer size made them a struggle for a young witch to pick up.
The hoe handles were so thick they required both hands to grip, and the hoe heads were so heavy the young witches could only drag them along the ground — lifting them was out of the question.
“Moira… you have kitchen utensil cards and cleaning tool cards. How about a farming tool card?” The young witches looked toward Mo Lan. They didn’t want to go through the trouble of attuning tools they’d only have to abandon later because they’d be too inconvenient to carry while traveling.
Nor did they want to drag these heavy things all the way back just to attune them.
These were far heavier than kitchen utensils or cleaning tools.
“Give me a moment!” Mo Lan had already been considering farming tool cards the moment she learned they’d need to attune farming tools.
The difference was that unlike the kitchen utensils she was familiar with, or the witch cleaning tools she’d seen Shana’s mother use and that came equipped in the dormitory, she hadn’t seen many witch farming tools yet.
She walked around the tool shed, familiarizing herself with the types and styles of witch farming tools, then summoned her Book of Cards and got to work.
Though the shapes were different, these were all ordinary tools — there was no difficulty in creating them whatsoever.

Three different versions of the Witch Farming Tool Card were quickly produced.
The prices were about the same as the Cleaning Tool Cards.
The young witches were old hands at buying cards by now.
One by one, they chose the purchasing plan best suited to their Talent and amount of magical power.
Those with strong Plant Magic Talent who would most likely pursue planting in the future chose the Flagship or Deluxe Edition.
Those with average Plant Magic Talent — who could only grow ordinary flowers for their own enjoyment, or some fruits and vegetables for personal consumption in the future — found the Basic Edition more than sufficient.
Mo Lan pulled out the parchment she always kept in her satchel and wrote up contracts one by one according to each young witch’s selection.
Another deposit of magical power flowed in, which she stored in the Book of Cards.
Now every young witch had a Witch Farming Tool Card of her own.
Holding a feather-light card was far more comfortable than dragging a massive hoe or lugging a giant watering can back.
When Amisha saw them return empty-handed, she said nothing.
When they pulled hoes and watering cans out of their cards, she wasn’t surprised either.
The young witches sat in the hedgehog grass field, cradling their hoes and watering cans as they began the attuning process.
After half a year of study, Magic Infusion — the most frequently used magic — had long since become second nature to them.
How much magical power to use at a time, what speed to output it at for maximum attuning efficiency — they knew it all by heart.
By the end of the class, their hoes and watering cans were already covered in a thin layer of magical radiance.
Mo Lan, Vasida, and Sylph — the three of them had such abundant mana that they never had to worry about insufficient attuning intensity, only about accidentally destroying things with too much power. Their efficiency was even higher.
By the time class ended, the energy Halos on their hoes and watering cans had grown so bright that even their eyes — still unable to directly perceive energy traces — could catch faint glimpses of the glow.
