Chapter 139 – Potions Class Concludes
by spirapira“So magic is idealistic, and mana is too! Could it be that the reason witches and Sorceresses can cast spells through imagination is because of this?”
Mo Lan had always felt that mana was far too versatile.
All kinds of magic, her Book of Cards — the energy source for everything was mana.
It was as if mana could, under certain conditions, transform into anything at all.
“Why don’t you flip back one more page?” Lady Amisha’s voice came through.
Mo Lan hurriedly flipped back a page: “Unsolved Mystery of Witches No. 99: Why can magical power and mana produce all kinds of magical effects in accordance with the will and commands of witches and Sorceresses? Answer: The reason magical power and mana can produce all kinds of magical effects is that they possess the highest degree of compatibility, capable of converting into all sorts of energies and combining into a wide variety of effects. Why only the energy mastered by witches and Sorceresses has the highest compatibility remains without a definitive answer to this day.”
In short, yet another thing that couldn’t be properly explained.
“Then may I ask, Headmistress, what do you think the reason is?” Mo Lan was a little curious about how the Headmistress would interpret this.
“It’s obviously because our souls are pure and favored by Valen’s will, so Valen wants to give us a little bit of every kind of energy. And so what was ultimately bestowed upon us is the energy with the highest compatibility!”
Mo Lan: “…”
How was this answer any different from “I’m the best little baby, so Mommy gave me the best of everything”?
Mo Lan could even extrapolate from there: “Then since Sorceress energy is not only highly compatible but also more powerful, is it because Sorceresses are even more favored by Valen’s will than witches? So not only does Valen want to give us a little bit of every kind of energy, but also wants to give us a bit more — which is why the result is mana, the energy with the highest compatibility and power, closest to the primordial source?”
“Exactly! It seems you’ve already mastered the knack for interpreting unsolved mysteries.”
Mo Lan: “…”
What an honor indeed!
She had completely lost interest in continuing to read this book.
She might as well check the Book of Cards and see what level the little witches had trained their magic to!
Besides the card-crafting slot on its cover and the Purple Gemstone that stored card-making energy, the Book of Cards could also store and record cards within its pages.
Every card crafted by the Book of Cards was recorded here, and the status of each card could be checked.
Recalling cards that were out in circulation was no problem either.
However, the cards that had been sold were all bound by contracts, and if she took them back, it would count as a breach of contract, and she would be penalized.
Checking the status of the cards, though, was perfectly fine.
She had originally upgraded Sylph’s and Vasida’s Status Cards to motivate them to study magic.
But later, when she sold the magic progress bar feature at half price and set up an indefinite competition with prizes among the first-years, the greater motivation had actually been for herself.
The more magic one learned, the more options one had.
When she wasn’t sure what to practice next, she could look at which of her fellow first-year witches was close to catching up with her in some particular magic, and then she’d know which one she should practice more.
When she wanted to learn a few new spells but didn’t have any clear preferences or needs at the moment, she could look at what magic the upper-year witches had learned, and then she’d know which spells had higher learning priority.
It helped her maintain the right rhythm for her magic studies.
The magic progress bars of the other first-year witches were all well within safe distance for Mo Lan.
Only Sylph’s Growth Acceleration spell was close to catching up with her.
There was still some time before bed, so she cast a Light spell, letting the illumination orb hover just above her forehead, and headed out to the vegetable garden for a late-night round. She not only used the Fertile Soil spell to fertilize all the garden plots in the courtyard, but also tended to every last plant with the Growth Acceleration spell and the Lush Flourishing spell.
When she went to sleep that night, what she placed beside her bed for Attuning was also witch farming tools.
The next evening, after visiting Greenhouse No. 1, she even made a detour to her own farmland.
Each little witch had her own strengths, and as long as they were behind her pushing her forward, she could ensure she kept advancing further and further along the path of being a well-rounded witch!
By the time Mo Lan had finished reading the entire 《The Witch’s Complete Potion Comperta》 series and all its Mo-Pics, when she went to the Potions Classroom that evening, she discovered that no new potion ingredients had been prepared there.
When she asked Headmistress No. 69, she learned that the first-year Potions class had officially concluded.
From now on, the little witches would have to find their own potion ingredients in the forest of Greenhouse No. 1.
All common potions could be found there.
For Mo Lan, this wasn’t a problem at all.
She came to the Potions Classroom every evening to brew several batches of potions and keep her skills sharp, but aside from using the pre-picked magical plants on the very first day, she had always gathered her own from the forest.
After all, the Sprites only prepared the magical plants needed for class — they wouldn’t prepare the ones she needed.
The other little witches had mastered the brewing of herbicide potions, insecticide potions, and recovery potions in class.
As for Mo Lan, give her the ingredients now and she could easily brew Apprentice-level and Beginner-level potions.
The reason she still couldn’t brew Intermediate, Advanced, or Peak-level potions wasn’t because her technique wasn’t up to par, but because of limitations in her potion-brewing magic level — extracting the essence of Intermediate-grade and above plants presented a certain degree of difficulty.
Apprentice-level potion ingredients were mainly ordinary plants, involving only small amounts of low-grade magical plants.
Beginner-level potion ingredients were primarily low-grade magical plants.
Extracting essences from these two tiers was completely effortless for Mo Lan.
Intermediate-level potions, however, involved intermediate-grade magical plants. Mo Lan had tried, and her extraction efficiency was very low, and the essence wasn’t pure enough either.
She would need to brew more potions to raise her potion-brewing magic level before she could extract higher-grade plant essences.
Potions class happened to end on a Friday. When Mo Lan returned to the Dormitory and checked the updated course schedule, the afternoon Potions class slots for the following week had indeed all been changed to Sewing Magic.
With Sewing Magic class about to start, shouldn’t she start selling her Sewing Tool Cards ahead of time?
Mo Lan had long since finished reading the Sewing Magic textbook, 《Learning Sewing Magic from Scratch》.
The book truly lived up to being part of the same series as 《Learning Culinary Magic from Scratch》 — both started by teaching the basic craft itself before introducing magic.
Sewing Magic also relied on the effects of Magic Infusion on objects, requiring one to Attune their sewing tools.
Mo Lan had already made herself a deluxe Sewing Tool Card long ago and started Attuning it early.
Although she hadn’t actually tried sewing anything yet, controlling individual sewing tools was already no problem for her.
The next morning, Mo Lan went to find other first-year witches first, pitching her Sewing Tool Cards so they could start Attuning them over the weekend.
Her reasoning was: “If you Attune them early and practice sewing with these tools, when it comes time to transition from regular sewing to Sewing Magic, it’ll be much easier.”
