Chapter 216 – Magical Languages
by spirapiraHaving mastered the fast-forward technique, the time saved allowed them to study the difficult sections more carefully, even rewatching them.
Lilith, Vasida, and Sylph finally managed to finish watching the first lesson’s tutorial video for the Demonic language course before class ended.
As for Mo Lan, she had finished watching the first two lessons of the Demonic language course, gaining a great deal from them.
Angelic and Demonic were just like angels and demons themselves—two sides of the same coin.
When one was spoken aloud, it naturally carried a holy aura; when the other was spoken, it naturally carried a dark aura.
Even someone who had never heard Angelic or Demonic before, knowing only the characteristics of angels and demons, could easily tell the two apart.
In her previous life, Mo Lan would never have imagined that a language could inherently carry such an aura.
This aura stemmed from the power embedded within the language itself.
The languages of a small number of magical races were not merely written symbols—they also had an affinity with their corresponding magical energies, possessed certain magical effects, and came with learning prerequisites.
The prime examples of this category of languages were Angelic, Demonic, and Elvish.
Studying Angelic could enhance one’s affinity with light elemental force to a certain degree, as well as one’s control over light-element magic.
Studying Demonic could enhance one’s affinity with dark elemental force to a certain degree, as well as one’s control over dark-element magic.
Studying Elvish could enhance one’s affinity with wood elemental force to a certain degree, as well as one’s control over wood-element magic.
The learning prerequisite for each was one’s affinity with the corresponding element—in other words, magical talent.
If one’s elemental affinity was too low, even if they learned to pronounce the language, speaking it would lack that distinctive aura and produce no special effects.
Put simply, anyone who knew Angelic was guaranteed to have strong talent in light-element magic. The same applied to Demonic and Elvish.
The Witch language was also a magical language, but it was not like Angelic or Demonic, where having the corresponding magical talent was enough to learn it.
The Witch language was dependent on bloodline. Without witch bloodline, one could never comprehend it.
It belonged exclusively to witches and could never be learned by outsiders.
The languages of innately magical races also carried magic within them.
All of this was knowledge she had gained only from watching the tutorial videos.
In the video, Lady Amisha had also recommended a book about magical languages: 《Research on Magical Languages》.
The last short period of the morning was the Draconic class, and this time, a new student who had elected to take Draconic joined the class.
“I’ve read in many Culinary Witch texts that the Dragons’ Delicacy Island is a paradise for meat lovers. Not only does it have many restaurants specializing in meat dishes, but it also has the largest meat ingredient market in all of Valen.
“Once I’ve learned Draconic, I plan to visit Dragon Isle after graduation,” Iris said.
Mo Lan recalled the introduction to the Dragon race in 《The Changing Ages of the Continent of Valen》.
The Dragons’ true forms were enormous, and their appetites matched. Unfortunately, they had no talent for cooking nor any culinary culture—in the beginning, they ate everything raw.
Their massive bodies meant they always kept their distance from other races, rarely engaging in deep interaction.
They never involved themselves in the conflicts of other races. Their only hobby was using their overwhelming strength to abduct “people” and bring them back to Dragon Isle.
The purpose of abducting “people” wasn’t anything sinister per se—they simply penned them up, bred them, and raised livestock to supply meat. And when food ran short, these “people” themselves could fill a belly or two.
The Dragons’ powerful bodies required vast quantities of flesh and blood to sustain them.
Later, after the Well of the Sky opened, the Dragons learned the art of shapeshifting from other worlds. Once they could assume the most common humanoid forms found across various worlds, some Dragons gradually began visiting human kingdoms for fun.
After tasting cooked human food, the Dragons could never go back. And so, the Dragons who had once loved abducting strong “people” to bring back to Dragon Isle as servants for herding and breeding livestock evolved into Dragons who loved abducting skilled cooks to prepare cooked meals for them.
They snatched a huge number of skilled cooks from all across Valen, and even from other worlds.
The term “people” here didn’t refer solely to humans, but to all intelligent beings who couldn’t defeat a Dragon in combat—though most of them happened to be humanoid or near-humanoid.
Once upon a time, Culinary Witches had been among those abducted. Moreover, because a Culinary Witch’s Culinary Magic could handle enormous quantities of ingredients at once when mastered at higher levels, they were perfectly suited to the appetites of the gluttonous Dragons. And since the witches themselves were so small—barely enough to pick one’s teeth with—the abducted Culinary Witches actually lived rather well among the Dragons.
That is, until three Sorceresses stormed Dragon Isle. After that, the Dragons never dared abduct witches again.
They established Delicacy Island, where the kidnapped cooks opened restaurants. They transformed Delicacy Island into the Dragons’ only externally accessible gourmet tourism destination.
It satisfied their own appetites while also earning money for the treasure-loving Dragons.
Every restaurant, shop, and even every employee and chef on Delicacy Island belonged to the Dragons—with the exception of Culinary Witches and their establishments.
The Dragons promised that any Culinary Witch willing to open a shop on Delicacy Island would receive a free storefront.
The higher the witch’s rank, the larger and more luxurious the shop.
From forcible abduction to enticing incentives—quite the evolution.
Witches who walked the path of Culinary Magic often loved going to Delicacy Island to earn their first pot of gold when they were young and poor.
And although Delicacy Island was open to outsiders, for the witches, their biggest customers were actually the Dragons themselves—creatures with enormous appetites and deep pockets.
Learning Draconic meant being better equipped to do business with the Dragons.
Although Draconic was also a magical language, it was not one with learning prerequisites like Angelic or Demonic, nor was it like the Witch language that outsiders could never learn.
When non-Dragons who had learned Draconic spoke with shapeshifted Dragons, there was actually no noticeable difference.
The only distinction was that Dragons could use Draconic to cast dragon-tongue magic, whereas non-Dragons who learned the language could not.
Of course, this limitation did not apply to Sorceresses, who could convert Mana into energy of any nature.
That Iris was planning to learn Draconic was not surprising at all.
“So can you tell me what this thing is now? Why were you all staring at it just now?” Iris had been sneaking glances at it for a while.
“It’s a projector. Oh, just let the Headmistress explain it to you!” Mo Lan said.
They had all been watching tutorial videos, and Lady Amisha’s class had been far too boring. As for the one and only teaching task left, Mo Lan figured she had better not do it for her.
Amisha: “…”
A few minutes later, Iris had also received her own Projector Card and Videotape Card (Witch Edition). Just like the rest of them, she opened the projector, poked the play button, and exclaimed in amazement, “How incredible!”
Mo Lan found it quite amusing. Witches from the magical world were amazed by technology from Earth, just as she had been amazed by magic.
Perhaps Earth wasn’t without magic after all—perhaps Earth’s magic was simply technology!
Her mind wandered for just a moment before the sound from her earphones jolted her so badly that she clapped her hands over her ears.
Covering her ears wasn’t even enough. She hurriedly pulled off the earphones, then turned the video’s volume down a few notches.
Just now, Lady Amisha in the video had recited the Draconic alphabet.
