Chapter 662 – Comprehend Languages
by spirapiraBy comparison, although Dreamweaver World’s task rewards were the worst, the potential gains from exploring the world were the highest.
Given that the direct and supplementary rewards from Moto World and the Azure Firmament Realm’s tasks were precious enough but poorly suited to her needs, these potential gains were already enough to make up for the inferior task rewards.
Mo Lan settled on Dreamweaver World as the first world she would explore and began making preparations.
Going to Moto World came with a knowledge infusion of the Moto language and script. Going to the Azure Firmament Realm came with a local identity to inherit—not just a body, but the memories that came with it—so there was no need to worry about language or cultural barriers.
But Dreamweaver World was different.
The task assistance for Dreamweaver World included only two things: Knowledge Infusion—Dream-Eating Tapir, and the Key of Dreams.
“Knowledge Infusion—Dream-Eating Tapir” was solely related to the Dream-Eating Tapir.
After entering Dreamweaver World’s ethereal-plane dream world through the Key of Dreams, one could obtain an identity within the dream world and, just like the native humans who entered the dream world, directly learn one of the dream world’s languages and scripts.
But knowledge of Dreamweaver World’s material-plane language and script was still missing.
Tasks from Dreamweaver World were posted frequently, and there was a fair amount of reference material. Mo Lan had seen books in the Otherworld Archives that had been transcribed from Dreamweaver World’s material plane, but there wasn’t a single properly compiled and organized textbook for learning the material plane’s language and script.
It wasn’t that Explorers didn’t value language and script—it was that learning a new language required considerable effort, and doing so just for a single task simply wasn’t worth it.
When encountering worlds without language-and-script knowledge infusions, Explorers typically prepared magical items with translation functions as aids.
For example, language amulets that let the wearer understand and speak any non-magical language; translation scrolls that could convert unfamiliar text transcribed onto them into a language the user knew; the Sage’s Monocle, a single-lens eyepiece that automatically displayed translation annotations when viewing unfamiliar non-magical text through it; and the Babel Stone, which allowed barrier-free communication with all living beings within a five-meter radius… These were all fairly common language-and-script translation magical items, easily purchasable at shops in Central Camp.
However, Mo Lan didn’t plan to buy any of these things. She had a better option.
Prophecy Magic inherited from the senior Witch Explorer, Lady Emilia—Comprehend Languages and Silver Tongue.
Comprehend Languages allowed the caster to understand unfamiliar non-magical spoken languages and read unfamiliar non-magical written scripts for the duration of the spell.
Silver Tongue allowed the caster to speak any non-magical language for the duration of the spell.
Combining these two spells was the best solution for overcoming language and script barriers during otherworld travel.
Lady Emilia had perished five hundred years ago. From that time onward, the two spellbooks 《Prophecy: Comprehend Languages》 and 《Prophecy: Silver Tongue》 became freely available for Witch Explorers to transcribe, while also bringing considerable revenue to the Otherworld Archives.
Senior Traci had also recommended them in 《Essential Reading List for Well of the Sky Exploration》.
Mo Lan had already transcribed them but hadn’t yet had time to study them.
She had originally planned to take them out and study at leisure during downtime on tasks if she went to a world that offered “Knowledge Infusion—Language and Script,” but now she needed to learn them ahead of schedule. Dreamweaver World was, after all, a Level Eight world. No matter how low the material plane’s magical level was, that was only relative to the ethereal plane. Mo Lan still wanted to blend in with the local humans as much as possible, rather than being treated as an outsider and targeted the moment she arrived in Dreamweaver World, which would add considerable difficulty to her task.
The knowledge in Lady Emilia’s two spellbooks both originated from the Mystrala World.
Magic in that world relied on something called the Weave.
The Weave lowered the innate talent requirements and casting difficulty for spellcasters, but at the same time limited their comprehension of magical energy.
Mystrala World’s magical diversity was second to none, but because of the Weave’s existence, without the world’s permission, Explorers found it very difficult to directly learn and take away its magic.
Generally, only after completing that world’s tasks could one bring back some cracked versions of magical knowledge.
Spells like Comprehend Languages and Silver Tongue that originated from Mystrala World and were highly practical for otherworld exploration cost over ten thousand Origin Mana Crystals at the Otherworld Archives.
For non-Witch races, purchasing the knowledge for these two spells cost fifty thousand Origin Mana Crystals—a testament to their value.
Mo Lan was already skilled in Prophecy Magic. Her Witch Divination Magic was at First Rank level, and her brass Dragon’s prophecy-type dragon-tongue magic had also reached the adult dragon stage, which was likewise equivalent to First Rank.
Even though Witch Divination Magic, brass Dragon prophecy magic, and Mystrala World’s Prophecy Magic were entirely different magical systems, the magical energy involved was roughly the same. Once Mo Lan figured out the principles and methods, her learning progress was rapid, and she mastered both spells in a single week.
If one were to cast these two spells in Mystrala World, they would be constrained by spell slots—spells to be cast had to be prepared a day in advance, couldn’t exceed one’s spell slots, and once a spell expired, one generally had to wait until the next day to prepare it again.
Moreover, Mystrala’s magic, like Valen’s mage Magic, had fixed effects. Comprehend Languages and Silver Tongue, when cast in Mystrala World, typically lasted only one hour per casting.
But what Mo Lan had learned were the cracked versions of Comprehend Languages and Silver Tongue that Mystrala offered as Explorer task rewards. As long as she had sufficient Mana, she could cast them repeatedly, and could also extend the spells’ duration by improving her own strength and deepening her understanding of the magic.
Correspondingly, the casting cost was far greater than the Weave versions of Comprehend Languages and Silver Tongue used in Mystrala World, and the innate talent requirements for Prophecy Magic were also higher.
Thanks to her accumulated experience with Divination Magic, the very first time Mo Lan cast Comprehend Languages and Silver Tongue, the spell duration reached a full three and a half hours.
With her current Mana tier and stock of ordinary Mana Crystals, casting Comprehend Languages and Silver Tongue on herself six or seven times a day was entirely effortless.
With the language and script issue resolved, Mo Lan also adjusted her appearance to match the physical features and clothing style of Dreamweaver World’s material-plane native humans.
The native humans of Dreamweaver World came in all shapes and varieties in the ethereal plane’s dream world, but in the material plane’s real world, they generally had brown-toned hair and black irises. Their skin was typically warm-white or cool-white. As for clothing style, although it was somewhat influenced by the dream world, it was overall rather minimalist.
Mo Lan dyed her hair dark brown, put in black colored contacts, and changed into a white tank top, a solid black pleated skirt, white socks, and black leather shoes, plus a black backpack—all without any patterns or designs.
Like this, she looked more or less indistinguishable from a native human of Dreamweaver World’s material plane.
