Chapter Index

Early Sunday morning, as sunlight had just crept over the rooftops of the Dormitory district, the young witches of the first, second, and third years were already clutching their student cards, sitting or lying about in their respective year-level groups, waiting.

The senior students of the fourth and fifth years had also found safe spots along their way to the Academy’s Inner Region and outer region, settling in to wait within their year-level groups.

At ten o’clock sharp, the livestream rooms for all five year levels lit up simultaneously.

The images of the Teaching Headmistresses appeared at the center of the light screens, with neatly organized question lists displayed behind them.

    【First Year Livestream Room】

Q: What is the Headmistress’s name? How should we address her?

A: Just calling her “Headmistress” is fine.

Q: When can we learn Culinary Magic and cook for ourselves?

A: After the first week’s introductory Alchemy class ends. Though you might not even need a full week.

Q: Why does Breadfruit taste so awful? Is there a way to eat it that isn’t so sour?

A: There is, but by tradition, you’ll need to discover it on your own!

Q: Can we only fill the Dormitory water tower by carrying water up ourselves?

A: You can also use Magic!

Q: Where can we get seeds and planting tools?

A: Seeds are available right at the Planting District. Planting tools will only be distributed during planting class.

    ……

In the first-year livestream room, questions popped up one after another. The new students knew nothing about the Academy’s history, so everything they asked was about the most practical, immediate concerns of daily life.

Meanwhile, in the upper-year livestream rooms, the atmosphere was much calmer.

“Why is there an extra two-hour self-study session added every night? What’s it for? If we don’t get enough sleep, how are we supposed to recover our Mana properly!”

The young witches had already grown accustomed to the Academy’s regular routines and understood the importance of sleep. The sudden addition of two hours of self-study left them quite anxious.

“The self-study sessions take place in the 【Study Space】. Only your consciousness enters—your body can rest fully. During self-study, you can practice Magic in the magic training room, read in the library, or brew potions and craft magical items in the potion-brewing room or Alchemy workshop.

The magic training room in the 【Study Space】 consumes virtual Mana. Once your Mana is depleted, it recovers instantly, with no effect on reality. The magical materials in the potion-brewing room and Alchemy workshop are also inexhaustible, and there are no safety concerns whatsoever. The library also contains the complete collection of the Academy Library.”

The comment feed went silent for a few seconds, then erupted.

“If Mana recovers instantly after being used up, does that mean we never have to worry about running out while practicing Magic?”

“Inexhaustible materials? So it doesn’t matter if I blow up a hundred attempts?”

“All the library books are accessible too? Does that mean we don’t have to trek all the way to the castle anymore?”

“Our bodies are sleeping while our minds are studying—just think how much extra study time that adds up to!”

The livestream room instantly boiled over. The earlier doubts were replaced by a cascade of exclamations.

The fourth and fifth-year witches were especially curious about the newly introduced Survival Game class.

“What is the Survival Game class like?”

“This class draws from various natural disasters and historical warfare records to construct game scenarios and rules within the Study Space. For you, it will be a highly realistic simulation exercise, designed to improve your magical application skills and survival capabilities.”

After learning about the benefits of the Study Space, the fifth-year witches felt a tinge of regret that they hadn’t been born at the right time. With only their final year remaining before graduation, they treasured every opportunity all the more: “If self-study and Survival Game classes are this incredible, can we apply for extra sessions? Or extend the class hours? Since it’s only our consciousness entering, it shouldn’t be tiring even if the sessions are longer, right?”

“The amount of time you can use the Study Space is related to the strength of your psychic power, and needs to be trained gradually. Each person’s self-study duration and Survival Game class schedule are set based on their psychic power level, and will increase progressively as your psychic power grows. If you want additional self-study time or wish to participate in extra Survival Games, you can also convert your Mana into psychic power when your Mana reserves are sufficient, and exchange it for Study Space usage time.”

“Can the Academy card still be used after graduation? What about the Study Space?”

“After graduation, the Academy card switches from student mode to alumni mode. Functions like 【Newcomer’s Guide】, 【Academy Map】, 【Class Schedule】, and 【Library】 will be deactivated. Functions like 【Contacts】, 【Examination System】, and 【Study Space】 will be retained, but will convert to a standard paid model.”

    ……

In the Headmistress’s Lounge, Mo Lan sat with Vasida, Sylph, and Lilith off-camera, watching their doppelgängers handle the Q&A session.

Vasida sat cross-legged on the sofa beside them, clutching a handful of roasted pine nuts she’d produced from who-knows-where. She tossed one into her mouth every now and then, the crisp crunch ringing out clearly:

“The first-years really are down-to-earth—everything they ask about is the big stuff like eating and sleeping.”

“They’re the luckiest ones, really. They have a full five years to adapt to and enjoy the benefits of the 【Study Space】. Look at the fifth-year witches—the moment they heard that some Academy card functions would become paid after graduation, they immediately started worrying about how to boost their psychic power faster.” Lilith said with a laugh.

Sylph set down her teacup. “Tomorrow is Monday. I can’t wait!”

    *

Monday morning at six o’clock, the Academy’s bell cut through the thin mist, echoing across the Dormitory district.

Sylvia opened her eyes practically the instant the bell sounded. She briskly threw back her covers, hopped out of bed, changed into the School Robe she’d prepared the night before, and clattered down the stairs to wash up.

Though the class schedule clearly stated that students should properly settle their bodies before entering the 【Study Space】, ideally lying in bed, she still didn’t want to show up to class on the first day of school with messy hair and a wrinkled nightgown.

After washing up, she grabbed the small remaining piece of Breadfruit from her desk and hastily gnawed a couple of bites to fill her stomach.

The sourness still shot straight to the top of her skull—no more tolerable than yesterday.

At six-twenty, she lay back down on her bed, took a deep breath, and opened her student card’s class schedule. Her fingertip hovered over “Introductory Alchemy.”

    Click.

Her vision blurred in an instant.

When everything came back into focus, she was sitting in a spacious, brightly lit classroom she’d never seen before.

Sunlight poured down through tall windows, falling across neatly arranged wooden desks.

Sylvia blinked in surprise and instinctively turned to look beside her.

Evelyn was sitting in the next seat over, wearing a puffy nightgown with a floppy sleep cap perched crookedly on her head.

Her gaze was hazy—she had clearly been forcibly yanked from deep sleep, and still carried a lingering air of dazed confusion.

Looking further over, Tessa was in much the same state—wearing a wrinkled set of pajamas with hair that looked like it had just lost a fight with her pillow. But her eyes were wide open and round, darting excitedly around the room.

Only Dorella, like Sylvia herself, was dressed neatly and properly, having even carefully tucked a freshly picked little wildflower into her hair.

“Why didn’t you all change your clothes?” Sylvia whispered.

“Too… sleepy… couldn’t get up…” Evelyn’s voice was slow and sluggish, each word sounding like it had been dragged out from under the covers.

“I figured since we’re coming straight to class and our bodies don’t need to move anyway, it doesn’t matter what we’re wearing!” Tessa said matter-of-factly, scratching at her disheveled hair.

There were many other young witches just like them. (End of Chapter)
