Chapter Index

Just then, Dorella couldn’t wait any longer to share her joy.

She carefully held out a card: “Look at the {Spatial Greenhouse Card} my mama gave me! Here, this is it! It’s so big inside! Mama even took me in and we planted lots and lots of beautiful flowers! There are magic circles inside that automatically adjust temperature, humidity, and sunlight. My mama must be a super, super amazing Green Witch!”

Her eyes were full of adoration.

Evelyn, who had been quietly listening the whole time, blinked her still-drowsy eyes upon hearing this and corrected her in a leisurely drawl:

“Dorella, haven’t you read the Mo Lan yet? It says in there that your mama Lilith is the ‘Blood Sorceress,’ and her best skill is Blood Magic. The ‘Hybrid Sorceress’ who’s best at planting and cultivating magical plants is my mama, Sylph!”

Though she was prone to sleepiness, she remembered what she’d read quite well.

Dorella froze for a moment, looking at the greenhouse card in her hands, then back at Evelyn, a hint of confusion crossing her little face: “Really? But… but my mama is really amazing at growing flowers! The flowers she plants bloom so quickly!”

“My mama is even more amazing!” Evelyn said. “She discovered that the reason I’m always sleepy isn’t because I’m sick or lazy, but because my body needs it — my Mana actually grows faster when I’m asleep. So she specially cultivated a new magical plant just for me called a ‘Slumber Bloom’! When I’m sleeping, I can attach a tiny bit of my consciousness to the Slumber Bloom, so I can ‘see’ the books next to the flower, or ‘listen’ to Mama telling stories, without interfering with my body’s sleep at all. Mama says I’m ‘learning in my dreams.'”

“Wow!” This marvelous combination made Sylvia gasp in amazement. She immediately thought of her own unfinished pile of Mo Lan, her glasses glinting brightly: “That’s incredible! Evelyn, is this ‘Slumber Bloom’ hard to grow? I want to ask my mama to grow one for me too! That way I could study the Mo Lan while sleeping, and have more time during the day to plan travel routes!”

“Sylvia, with your fitness training and now wanting to use a Slumber Bloom for studying, can you really handle all of that?” Tessa couldn’t help asking.

“My mama is the Grindlord Sorceress, you know! How could her daughter not manage something this small?” Sylvia said, hands on her hips.

The four little ones chattered away, showing off the “special projects” their mamas had prepared for them.

Only Sylvia, after showing off the magical map her mama had given her, became interested in her friends’ projects too.

And so, that evening after returning home, Sylvia couldn’t wait to run over to Mo Lan’s side. Looking up with her little face, counting on her fingers, she earnestly presented her new “requests”:

“Mama, Mama! I also want to use that {Dietary Fortification Card} that Tessa mentioned! And I want a ‘Slumber Bloom’ pot like Evelyn’s! And also… could you give me a little portable planting greenhouse like Dorella’s too?”

Mo Lan looked at her daughter’s utterly serious little expression and raised her eyebrows in surprise.

She lifted Sylvia onto her lap and asked gently: “Oh? Why do you suddenly want so many things? Tell Mama — why do you want all of these?”

Sylvia leaned into her mother’s arms, gathered her thoughts, and began explaining with clear, organized logic:

“Tessa said that with the {Dietary Fortification Card}, you can gain lots of strength just from eating, and you can even learn to fight… oh no, I mean learn to protect yourself!

I can’t use powerful magic like Mama yet, but I can start by eating well and growing strong. That way, if I ever run into danger, I can use my fists to protect myself instead of always relying on Mama for everything!”

Her little fists were clenched tight, her eyes full of determination that said “I want to become strong too.”

“As for the Slumber Bloom,” she switched to a “shrewd and calculating” expression,

“I think it’s such a waste to let sleeping time go to nothing! Evelyn said that while her body sleeps, her mind can go into the flower to read and study without missing a thing. I want that too!

Let my body sleep well and grow properly, while my ‘little mind-person’ crawls into the flower and keeps reading the Mo Lan, or helps Mama plan travel routes! Wouldn’t that be amazing?”

Mo Lan held back her laughter and continued asking: “Then… why do you want a spatial greenhouse? Has our Sylvia become interested in growing flowers too?”

“This one!” Sylvia straightened her little frame, her expression becoming even more serious, even carrying a touch of solemnity:

“Doesn’t the Mo Lan say so? We witches should pursue independence and freedom! I think ‘self-sufficiency’ is super, super important for independence, and the first goal of self-sufficiency is filling your tummy!

I want to learn to grow some grain and vegetables, so when we go traveling, we won’t have to worry about going hungry no matter where we are! And also… Tessa secretly told me that after using the {Dietary Fortification Card}, you get a really big appetite!

If we’re always buying food, wouldn’t that cost lots and lots of money? If we grow our own food, we won’t have to spend as much, right!”

When she finished, she even nodded firmly, feeling she had thought everything through quite thoroughly.

Looking at her daughter’s perfectly earnest, methodical analysis of how to achieve self-sufficiency and save money by growing vegetables, Mo Lan finally couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst out laughing with a “pfft.”

She hugged her daughter tight, pressing her cheek against Sylvia’s soft little face, her heart warm and overflowing, yet tickled with amusement all at once.

“Silly child,” Mo Lan’s voice was brimming with indulgent laughter, “first of all, your mama here is very rich, you know! Never mind feeding one of you — even if I had to feed ten thousand little foodies like you, I wouldn’t need to worry about the cost of meals at all. While we’re traveling, you can buy whatever delicious food you want. Don’t worry about money!”

She gently tapped the tip of Sylvia’s nose and continued:

“However, wanting to use the {Dietary Fortification Card} to build up your body — Mama fully supports that idea. Having a healthy body makes everything easier, no matter where you go.

I’ve also heard Sylph mention the Slumber Bloom. It’s a wonderful plant — it ensures sufficient sleep and physical growth while making good use of time, and it even boosts Mana growth speed and trains your psychic power. Mama can grow one for you too.”

Hearing that Mama had agreed to two of her requests, a radiant smile instantly bloomed across Sylvia’s little face.

“But,” Mo Lan shifted her tone, looking at her daughter with an amused smile, “about the vegetable growing… with those tiny little arms and legs of yours, you can’t even lift the smallest magical hoe. How would you farm?”

Sylvia froze for a moment, looked down at her own plump little hands, and seemed to only just realize this problem. Her little face fell slightly.

Mo Lan explained gently: “Besides, when we witches farm, we don’t need to do the manual labor ourselves. We have planting magic and farming tools that take care of the plants on their own. You’ll learn proper planting magic naturally once you start school. There’s no need to rush.”

Seeing her daughter’s disappointment, Mo Lan stroked her head and offered a compromise:

“How about this — Mama promises that in our future mobile dwelling, we’ll set up a vegetable plot, and you can help Mama plant and tend it together. How does that sound?”

Though she didn’t immediately get her dreamed-of “portable vegetable garden,” hearing that she could have a little garden in the mobile dwelling and even help out, Sylvia’s eyes lit up again.

She nodded vigorously: “Deal! Mama has to keep her promise!”

“It’s a pinky promise.” Mo Lan smiled and hooked pinkies with her daughter. (End of Chapter)
