Chapter 131 – Magic Frees Your Hands
by spirapiraChapter 131 – Magic Frees Your Hands
After learning the Levitation Spell and all the Household Magic spells, Mo Lan’s morning routine before school had transformed into something like this:
Upon waking, the first thing she did was grab the Wand from beside her pillow.
With a Levitation Spell, the School Robe she planned to wear that day came flying out of the wardrobe.
She changed into the robe, then gave her Wand another wave to cast a Tidying Spell. The pillows and blankets, rumpled from sleep, restored themselves to the neat state they’d been in before bed the night before.
The nightgown she’d changed out of drifted down to the dirty laundry hamper on the ground floor.
Next, she swept the Wand in the direction of her nightstand. The Magical Hair Ribbon floated over and began combing through her hair.
By the time she descended from the loft, the ribbon had already tied her hair up neatly.
Then, levitating the laundry hamper and the dirty clothes inside it, she brought everything over to the window and pushed it open.
The dirty clothes lined up one by one and hung themselves on the clothesline. Then, from a distance, she cast a Cleaning Spell on all of them.
The clothes were instantly clean—though because they’d absorbed some water elemental force, they were slightly damp. Hanging them outside for a bit would dry them right up.
Her washing machine and dryer cards had been sitting completely idle ever since she’d learned the Cleaning Spell.
It never rained during the day here in the Dormitory district.
Once the laundry was hung, she closed the window, cast another Cleaning Spell on her face and teeth, and her morning hygiene was done.
No toothbrush needed, no toothpaste, no facial cleanser. Water elemental force could wash away anything that didn’t belong on her body.
All she had to do was pop into the washroom to check her reflection in the mirror and make sure she looked presentable for the day.
After checking the mirror, she came out and settled onto one of the tall stools at the kitchen bar counter. Pots, pans, bowls, and utensils sprang to life on their own, preparing breakfast for her.
This morning’s menu was egg pancakes with Breadfruit juice.
Though she still couldn’t direct two kitchen utensils simultaneously, she’d already reached the point where she could split her attention a little while casting Culinary Magic.
Especially when making something she’d already cooked several times before—she could even sneak in some reading.
Only when the plate of egg pancakes settled down in front of her and the juice pitcher poured her a glass did she finally set her Wand down for a moment to properly enjoy breakfast.
After eating, every dirty dish and utensil gathered themselves in the sink. One Cleaning Spell washed them all, and a final Tidying Spell sent everything back to its proper place.
Mo Lan turned away from the counter and walked toward the Dormitory entrance. As she reached the door, the shoulder bag hanging from the door hook dropped neatly onto her.
She pulled out her {Cleaning Tool Card}, selected a lighter cleaning tool to carry by hand, and didn’t forget to let the Grimoire float alongside her.
Attuning the cleaning tool as she walked, she read the potion-brewing section of 《Common Magical Plants and Basic Potion Brewing》 as she headed out of the Dormitory.
She’d gotten up at the same time as usual, but left much earlier than before. Magic really did make a person more efficient.
Throughout the entire morning, the only things she’d actually touched with her own hands were her eating chopsticks, the {Cleaning Tool Card}, the little broom she was currently holding, and her Wand.
One could say she’d essentially freed her hands, using magic to replace everything that could be replaced.
“Wow! You don’t have to lift a finger for anything? Doesn’t that make it super easy?” Vasida’s first reaction after hearing about her magical morning was exactly this.
Easy?
Mo Lan shook her head. “My body might have it easier, but this—” she tapped her temple, “—definitely doesn’t.”
“My hands may be free, but my mind is even more exhausted. It’s constantly active, controlling the magic. Maybe once my Household Magic and Levitation Spell reach higher levels, the mental burden will ease up too. But at my current Apprentice-level proficiency, I still need to give very precise instructions for every spell. There’s no relaxing for my brain.”
After that whole magical morning routine, it might have looked effortless to an outsider, but Mo Lan actually felt more tired than if she’d done everything by hand. Still, it was all for the sake of getting more practice with magic.
Using magic wherever she could was better than waiting for idle moments to practice in concentrated sessions—it wasted less Mana that way.
“It seems like learning magic isn’t easy, and mastering it is even harder! We Sorceresses may have great talent, but the pressure on us to learn is also much greater than what the witches face…” Sylph had been feeling the academic pressure mounting lately.
“Even if we have unlimited potential in all schools of magic, there’s no need to advance every single one equally and push them all to perfection, right? We should just start with the ones we like and the ones we need!”
Vasida took a more relaxed view of things.
“That’s true. Among the Book Witch, the Fireworks Witch, and the Sorceress, only the Book Witch managed to achieve true omniscience and omnipotence…” Sylph consoled herself. “What matters most for a Sorceress is her own Manifested Gift!”
Mo Lan: “…”
That line of thinking was a bit dangerous! Having unlimited potential in all schools of magic was also a critically important Sorceress talent!
It wasn’t as though she didn’t understand how difficult omnipotence was!
The Witch Magic Catalog only recorded basic information for each spell, and it already filled several massive volumes.
At Mo Lan’s learning speed, mastering them all wasn’t impossible—it might not even take too long. But if the goal was to raise every single one to Peak level or beyond? That would absolutely be extremely challenging.
A person’s energy was finite, after all.
And what’s more, this catalog added new spells every few years.
But she had to learn them.
The Book of Cards wasn’t omnipotent—it couldn’t create just anything.
Mo Lan wasn’t omnipotent either. But if she became omnipotent, her cards would become omnipotent too.
Her learning process was, in essence, the process of strengthening the Book of Cards.
Still… Sylph and Vasida, fellow Sorceresses that they were, couldn’t afford to slack off too much either!
“Do you two have your {Status Cards} with you?” Mo Lan asked.
“Of course!” Vasida said. “Why?”
“I have mine too,” Sylph added.
“I’ve developed a new feature for the {Status Card}. It’s still in the research phase and isn’t fully polished yet. Would you two be willing to help me test it out?”
Mo Lan said earnestly, “It won’t affect any of the card’s existing functions. It’s just a small new feature, and I want you to help me see if it’s user-friendly. Free of charge!”
“Of course!” Vasida and Sylph both agreed without hesitation, handing their Status Cards over to her.
Then Mo Lan gave their cards a little reforging.
“Done!” Mo Lan handed the cards back to them.
Vasida and Sylph examined their cards curiously. There, in the magic section of the card face, they saw a series of small gray bars, each one filled with varying lengths of green.
Each bar also displayed a percentage—precise down to the ten-thousandth of a percent.
“What is this?” they both asked curiously.
“Magic learning progress bars! As your magic improves, the green in these bars will gradually grow longer and the numbers will slowly increase. Once the green fills the entire bar and the number reaches 100%, your spell will have advanced to the next level!”
Mo Lan explained.
