    Chapter 242 – Spatial Magic

Mo Lan had always wanted to create storage-space type cards, but had been held back by insufficient knowledge and ability, unable to produce them.

To make such cards, besides spatial runes and spatial item Alchemy blueprints, Spatial Magic was her greatest breakthrough point.

Spatial Magic was perhaps even more important than the others.

Because without spatial-attribute magical materials, even a Peak-level Alchemy Witch couldn’t craft spatial items.

The more advanced the Alchemy, the higher the material requirements.

Spatial-attribute magical materials had always been classified as rare magical materials in Valen, perpetually in short supply.

This naturally meant that spatial items were scarce in Valen, and very few people could own one.

However, the Spatial Spell within the witches’ Spatial Magic system was the only magic in all of Valen capable of artificially creating spatial-attribute magical materials.

One could say that a Spatial Witch could build a fortune and live a life of luxury on the Spatial Spell alone.

Unfortunately, witches with outstanding Spatial Magic talent were exceedingly rare. Setting aside Sorceresses, among ordinary witches, those possessing Spatial Magic talent were one in ten thousand.

Even rarer than the probability of a Sorceress appearing among witches.

Moreover, the Spatial Spell required at least Advanced-level Spatial Magic talent to cast successfully.

So the number of witches who could possess spatial items was also quite small.

Most witches relied on another spatial spell with lower learning requirements — the Shrinking Spell — to carry their personal belongings.

The Shrinking Spell was also an essential spatial magic for every witch’s daily life and travels.

But the Shrinking Spell was still not as convenient as spatial items for storage.

Mo Lan had been reading books on Spatial Magic for some time now and had gotten through most of them.

Spatial Magic had very few offensive and defensive spells, only one of each: the Spatial Blade and the Spatial Shield.

But both of these spells worked by splitting space — if you couldn’t block spatial fission, you couldn’t block the Spatial Blade, and if you couldn’t tear through space, you couldn’t break the Spatial Shield.

Their lethality and defensive power were more than a cut above Elemental Magic of the same level. Of course, comprehending and learning them was also more difficult.

As for auxiliary spatial spells, their applications were endlessly versatile, and Mo Lan didn’t want to miss a single one.

    There was the Shrinking Spell she’d learned in magic class, which could spatially compress and shrink objects;

    There was the Spatial Spell, which could transform ordinary materials into spatial-attribute magical materials;

    There was the Teleportation Spell, which could traverse space, covering a thousand miles in a single step;

And there was the Expansion Spell, which could enlarge spaces…

Aside from the Shrinking Spell, which only required Apprentice-level Spatial Magic talent to learn, all the others required Advanced-level talent or above.

For Mo Lan, talent was naturally not a problem. Learning them probably wouldn’t be difficult, but advancing the level of these spatial spells would not be easy.

When Mo Lan cast the Shrinking Spell, she had already discovered that converting mana into spatial power for spellcasting was far more difficult than converting mana into elemental force.

According to the books, this was because spatial power was a slightly higher energy tier than elemental force.

It was also because of this that Mo Lan had started reading the Spatial Magic books early and planned to study and train in it alongside Alchemy, potion-making, and Plant Magic, finding extra time for practice.

After hurrying to finish reading the remaining portion of the Spatial Magic books, Mo Lan attempted to cast the spatial spells.

As expected, she succeeded on her very first attempt.

But fundamentally, aside from the Shrinking Spell and the Spatial Spell, the others were of little practical use.

After all, she hadn’t even filled 1% of the Apprentice-level magic progress bar. Spatial Magic mostly only showed its power at higher levels.

At Mo Lan’s current mana tier, the spatial blade produced by the Spatial Blade spell could only leave a wound half a finger long and half a millimeter deep on a training dummy. Even if it struck a vital point, it wouldn’t cause much damage.

The Spatial Shield’s protective area was only the size of a fingernail — probably enough to block a single flying needle.

The Teleportation Spell could teleport a single soybean from her left pocket to her right pocket.

The Expansion Spell could turn the interior space of a palm-sized coin purse into a two-palm-sized space, maintained for one minute.

For a young witch whose magical power was genuinely at the Apprentice level, the effects of these spells would be even worse.

The Apprentice-level Shrinking Spell was far more practical than the Spatial Spell.

With practice, an Apprentice-level Shrinking Spell could shrink ordinary objects by up to ten times.

An Apprentice-level Spatial Spell, even when practiced to perfection, could only imbue a pitifully small amount of spatial attribute in a single casting — practically useless on its own. But it could be used repeatedly, casting on the same item over and over, accumulating little by little until it became useful.

Of course, because the proficiency was so low, the total spatial attribute that could ultimately be accumulated was also limited.

Without breaking through the Apprentice level, the materials produced could at best make a spatial item of roughly one cubic meter — and that would already be impressive.

According to the bookerta《How to Quickly Create a Spatial Stone》, casting the Spatial Spell on gemstones yielded the best results.

For this reason, Mo Lan had specifically gone to the West Tower’s low-level magical items warehouse and selected a small Purple Gemstone as her casting material for the Spatial Spell.

Every day she would practice the Spatial Spell on it for a while, looking forward to the day it would transform from an ordinary gemstone into a spatial-attribute magical gemstone.

Even if she couldn’t use it to create a card with spatial attributes, making a Spatial Magic Gemstone Card would certainly be no problem.

And then she’d have materials for crafting spatial items too.

Spatial-attribute magical materials were simply too scarce — whenever any appeared, they had long since been made into spatial items.

Mo Lan had asked Lady Amisha, and the Academy warehouse didn’t have a single piece of spatial-attribute magical material. If she wanted to practice crafting, she’d have to figure it out on her own.

She could only pin her hopes on the spatial magic gemstone she was creating herself.

But raising her Spatial Magic level was truly no easy feat.

The proportion of mana that could be converted into spatial power with each casting grew at a barely noticeable rate.

She’d been practicing for two months already, and it was still only at 0.2%.

If the Spatial Magic level progress bar on Mo Lan’s Status Card could display normally, it would currently show only one-tenth of the Apprentice level.

With any other type of magic, after practicing this long, the Apprentice-level progress bar would be at least half full.

Only Spatial Magic remained hopelessly distant, crawling forward at a snail’s pace.

It was so slow that Mo Lan couldn’t help asking Lady Amisha about it during Magic Q&A class:

“…Headmistress, is there something wrong with how I’m learning Spatial Magic? The progress is way too slow!”

“How is your progress slow? They say mana is stronger than magical power and converts energy more easily — and sure enough, it’s true!” Amisha said irritably.

Mo Lan had a nagging feeling that what Lady Amisha said sounded familiar. After a moment’s thought, she remembered: “Isn’t that from 《Unsolved Mysteries of Witches》? Can you really take that seriously?”

“When I first began formally studying Spatial Magic, I was several tiers above your current level, with several more zeros in my total mana — and yet I wasn’t much faster than you. You tell me whether you should take it seriously,” Amisha said, looking at her with a resentful gaze.
