Chapter 394 – Mo Lan’s Psychic Power
by spirapiraChapter 394 – Mo Lan’s Psychic Power
Mo Lan suspected these claims reeked of humans flattering themselves.
If it were truly the case that only humans possessed innate psychic power, and that only those with innate controllable psychic power could learn meditation, then what were those crystal-clear meditation images in her mind?
That she could do it probably wasn’t because she was a Sorceress, either.
The reason Sorceress Magic had no upper limit on talent was because Mana had the greatest power and versatility among all energies, with the highest energy tier, capable of converting into any lower-tier energy for spellcasting. It wasn’t because Sorceresses were born with innate psychic power.
According to 《The Valen Complete Travel Guide》, Sorceresses first cultivated a small amount of psychic power through meditation, then converted Mana into psychic power to disguise themselves as human mages.
But this 《The Origin of Psychic Power》 stated that meditation could only improve one’s control over psychic power, not increase the psychic power itself. One needed innate psychic power before meditation was even possible.
Both were verified foundational theory texts, so the probability of either being wrong was quite low.
If both were correct, then there was only one possibility — Sorceresses inherently possessed innate psychic power.
Sorceresses themselves had no particular affinity for psychic power. Neither Mana nor Manifested Gifts had anything to do with psychic power.
The most likely source of this innate psychic power was humans.
Sorceresses descended from witches, and witches descended from humans.
Even now, there were still witches who awakened from among humans!
Awakening was only an awakening of magical bloodline, unrelated to psychic power. So it was entirely plausible that Sorceresses and witches inherently possessed the same innate psychic power as humans.
However, to verify this hypothesis, one would need to have witches try learning meditation techniques.
Mo Lan instinctively wanted to share this conjecture with Madam Amisha, but when she looked up, she remembered — she was no longer at the Academy.
She could only write a letter to Madam Amisha using golden bird stationery.
She didn’t forget about Grandma Dayla and Mama Shana, either.
If witches truly possessed innate psychic power, then those among them with reasonably strong innate psychic power could absolutely try learning human mage Magic to compensate for their own magical shortcomings.
After finishing her letters, Mo Lan returned to reading 《The Origin of Psychic Power》. The more she read, the more she felt that the concepts of innate psychic power and psychic power training resembled Earth’s brain development theory.
Earth’s brain development theory: “Ordinary people have only developed 10% of their brain. Even the world’s greatest scientists have only developed 15%. At least 90% of the human brain remains undeveloped.”
《The Origin of Psychic Power》: “The majority of psychic power lies hidden within the soul, dormant and sluggish, impossible to control. Only humans are born with a small portion of active psychic power. Using this portion as a catalyst, one can train the psychic power hidden within the soul through meditation, gradually awakening it during the process of constructing meditation images, step by step, until it ultimately becomes a force that can be freely commanded.”
Wait… psychic power constructs meditation images?
Could it be that the meditation images were psychic power itself?
Yes! Although she had effortlessly succeeded in meditating on all the images in 《Sky Meditation》, she had never once considered how these images had become so deeply engraved in her mind.
Was it possible that because her psychic power was strong enough — exceeding the highest meditation difficulty of 《Sky Meditation》 — that was why it had been so easy?
Mo Lan obediently recreated “Sky Meditation Image 1” in her mind, then for the first time shifted her attention away from the image itself to the more fundamental composition underlying it.
And then she sensed an energy distinct from both Mana and elemental force.
It was somewhat like psychic power, yet somehow different.
She had never truly discovered it before, yet it seemed to have been inseparable from her all along — unfamiliar yet familiar. Directing it to gather at her fingertip, a completely new energy emerged from the tip of her finger.
The elemental force in the air seemed curious about it, swirling around the small cluster of energy at her fingertip.
Though there was no direct contact, the elemental force was drawn to it. When Mo Lan wiggled her fingertip, the surrounding elemental force swayed along with it.
It was psychic power, no doubt about it!
The most distinctive characteristic of psychic power was that, depending on one’s affinity, it could attract and command different types of elemental force.
This was the true root of how mages could master Elemental Magic.
The elemental force around Mo Lan was attracted regardless of type, likely because her affinity with all elements was extremely high — consistent with her Sorceress talents.
But if meditation images were constructed from psychic power, then what about the vast ocean of Earth memories in her mind, the memories of drifting through the sea of stars, the memories since her birth in Emerald Creek Plains… They were all just as clear as the sky meditation images, just as rich in detail, just as readily reproducible in her mind. Could they, too, have been constructed from psychic power?
Mo Lan unfurled the most enormous collection of memories in her mind — the memories of Earth’s civilization.
Then, just as she had observed the meditation images, she examined the underlying energy composing them.
An overwhelming torrent of psychic power energy, so massive it felt almost tangible, surged toward her. Mo Lan was so stunned she nearly forgot to breathe.
Nearby, Lilith, Sylph, and Vasida — still struggling to meditate on “Sky Meditation Image 1” — suddenly felt an immense pressure of energy wash over them. Every hair on their bodies stood on end.
It was a good thing they were already lying down, otherwise they would have been flattened to the ground.
Their hearts leapt to their throats as they all thought the same thing — with the senior Sorceresses away, a powerful enemy had come. How were they supposed to protect the Wilds and lead the witches to safety?
Then they suddenly realized the pressure was coming from right beside them — from Mo Lan, who sat cross-legged on a cushion with her head bowed, holding a book.
Meanwhile, her familiar Zhizhi appeared completely oblivious, happily hugging a wine bottle and drinking away.
Mystery solved. It was Mo Lan’s doing.
Mo Lan hastily soothed the psychic power that had surged with her shock, let out a long breath, and looked up to see her three companions lying stiffly in a row on the ground, eyes darting toward her.
“Ahem, sorry about that. Lost control for a moment.”
Lilith sat up the instant she felt the pressure vanish. “Explain! What just happened? You felt like some kind of super terrifying monster just now! Even an ordinary Beyond Peak level powerhouse probably couldn’t produce that kind of energy pressure, right?”
“Did a whole bunch of people suddenly buy your Magic?” Sylph asked. “No, that doesn’t make sense. I haven’t heard of any large groups of witches returning to the Wilds recently!”
“Even if every single witch bought Moira’s Magic at the same time, it wouldn’t cause that kind of commotion, would it?” Vasida said.
“Well… I just suddenly discovered that I’m apparently also a mage prodigy, with a massive amount of active psychic power…”
Even Mo Lan found it somewhat surreal as she said it:
“My ability to never forget anything I’ve seen — it’s probably because my psychic power is so strong that I can effortlessly store everything I see and hear in my mind as clearly as constructing meditation images…”
