Chapter 448 – The Dawn Society
by spirapiraChapter 448 – The Dawn Society
Mo Lan had no solution either. “Unless their owner comes to command them to retreat, or a large number of mutant blackdeath tree fruits appear in every direction to lure them away.”
Neither of those scenarios was achievable.
The reason these undead creatures were left to roam free here was precisely because they had fallen too far behind their owner’s level, had little value for further cultivation, and were in a semi-abandoned state. No witch would come to check on them regularly.
The mutant blackdeath tree fruits had already been divided up and eaten by Spicy Hotpot, Nick, and Clack. There was no way to grow a second tree anytime soon.
Even Mo Lan’s Book of Cards couldn’t produce material cards for mutant plants cultivated through Hybrid Magic.
“Since we can’t stop it, let’s at least take some photos!” Vasida pulled out a camera, flew up into the sky, and snapped pictures of the battlefield below from every angle.
Mo Lan went straight for a video recorder. Such a large-scale undead creature free-for-all—it would be a real shame if Clack couldn’t see it.
Clack was still in deep sleep digesting the doll fruit, and wouldn’t be waking up anytime soon.
She’d just have to record it as future combat training material for Clack.
Although she had no plans to develop Clack for combat at the moment, that didn’t mean she’d never do so in the future.
Once Clack’s energy tier rose higher and it could learn more skills, she would ultimately need to ensure it had the ability to protect itself.
The battle raged for an entire day and night before finally subsiding.
At the start, there had been undead creatures packed together as far as the eye could see. When it ended, only scattered limbs and skeletal remains littered the ground.
Not a single beast-form Ghost remained—they had all been consumed as soul nourishment by the other undead creatures.
The Zombies and skeletons hadn’t been completely wiped out, but not a single one could still get back on its feet.
When Lilith discovered there were still surviving Zombies and skeletons, she was overjoyed. “It’s our turn to step in! Moira, you take the skeletons, and Vasida and I will handle the Zombies!”
This time, they didn’t even need to promise corpse materials as payment—there were Zombies and skeletons scattered across the ground, ready for practice.
“Got it!” Mo Lan certainly wasn’t going to pass up such a perfect, legitimate opportunity to practice.
The three Sorceresses combed through the entire undead battlefield with meticulous care. Any undead creature that hadn’t completely perished was rescued by them, then scattered and deposited throughout the Black Forest to prevent them from fighting again so soon.
After this battle, the number of undead creatures in the area had drastically decreased, but those that survived had reaped enormous benefits. Having absorbed the spiritual essence of other undead creatures, even the weakest among them were now Intermediate-level undead, and some had even become Advanced-level undead creatures.
“Finally done!” Vasida straightened her back and cast a Cleaning spell on herself.
After spending days rummaging through corpses and skeletal remains, she felt like the stench of rotting flesh had practically pickled into her skin.
“After this, I shouldn’t have to worry about not being able to repair Nick if he gets injured.” Lilith breathed a sigh of relief.
“Vasida, Lilith, dinner’s ready!”
At the entrance to their campsite, Mo Lan called out using the Amplification Spell.
She had long since finished repairing all the surviving skeletons and had moved on to cultivating her own mutant blackdeath tree.
“Coming!” Lilith and Vasida called back.
After the meal, Mo Lan said, “Everyone should meditate and recover. At four o’clock this afternoon, we’ll set out and leave this place.”
Now that their undead servant crafting was complete and Sylph’s mutant blackdeath tree had also been finished, there was no reason to stay any longer.
Although the sleeping potion kept its subject in deep slumber, it also had the effect of nourishing the body.
If Greta slept too long and recovered too well, it would be inconvenient for what they needed to do next.
This had all been part of their plan from the start, so Lilith, Vasida, and Sylph had no objections.
They each went back to meditate, packed up their things, and departed at four o’clock sharp.
Lilith controlled the flying carpet, carrying Vasida and Sylph.
Mo Lan’s flying carpet held a small-space tent, and she sat in the only spot available in front of it—just enough room for one person—flying behind Lilith.
It wasn’t until they reached the tree where Greta had originally collapsed that the two flying carpets came together side by side.
Mo Lan ducked into the tent and floated the sleeping Greta out.
Greta had been under Mo Lan’s care the entire time, and it had been quite a few days since Lilith and the others had seen her.
Now, upon seeing her appearance, they couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise. “How did she…”
Greta had reverted back to that frail, weakened state of someone whose body had been invaded by Death Force.
“I left the small tent’s windows open these past two days and didn’t block out the Death Force. It’ll make things easier for what comes next.”
As Mo Lan spoke, she placed Greta back at the base of the tree in her original position, even restoring the black robe on her body to exactly how it had looked when they first found her.
Although Lilith, Vasida, and Sylph had all read Mo Lan’s contractor recruitment plan and the design concept for the Dawn Society cards, they still didn’t know exactly how she planned to test Greta. They watched her now with great curiosity.
Mo Lan checked her watch, and when the time reached four-thirty, she administered the antidote to the sleeping potion to Greta.
When Greta had originally collapsed here, it had been around the same time of day.
Although Mo Lan had deliberately allowed the Death Force to invade Greta’s body ahead of time, the nourishing effects of the sleeping potion meant that Greta’s physical condition was actually still much better than when they had first discovered her.
Shortly after the antidote was administered, Greta slowly stirred awake.
Greta had no idea that she had been asleep for several days, nor that she had been taken in by a group of Sorceresses.
Waking up now, she found that her body was still weak, yet she no longer felt that hazy, near-death sensation. She found this somewhat strange—until she suddenly noticed a thin foreign object in her hand. Looking closely, she saw it was a card with a black background and gold patterns: “{Dawn Society Trial Invitation}?”
What is this?
Greta didn’t remember ever having something like this.
Did I wake up because of this?
Just as the thought crossed her mind, the card in her hand transformed into an actual letter.
“Are you trapped in darkness, yet refusing to submit to fate, striving to find a way to break free?
The Dawn Society invites you to undertake a trial. Upon passing, the Society’s magical knowledge, magical materials, magical items, and magical skills will all be open to you.
Here, there are no gods and mortals, no nobles and commoners, not even distinctions of race. Everyone can earn the rewards they deserve through their own efforts.
We welcome all who, like us, find themselves in darkness yet remain steadfast in their pursuit of dawn.
We once trekked long through the darkness. Now we stand in the dawn, and with the breaking of day as our oath, we forge the path of our own emergence into beacons to guide those who come after toward the brilliant dawn.
If you are willing to accept the trial, to become one of us, and to pledge that regardless of whether you pass or fail, you will never reveal the existence of the Dawn Society—then sign your name here. The trial card will provide you with a means of escaping your current predicament.
—Dawn Society Guiding Mentor, Moira”
