Chapter 531 – Memory Palace
by spirapiraChapter 531 – Memory Palace
Although Samantha said the book was a gift for her,
the book, sitting on the ground, reached up to her knees. It was so unwieldy that Mo Lan could hardly imagine herself hauling this book through Tower Forest to find her dormitory without being able to use the Witch Levitation Spell.
She decided to finish reading it on the spot, so she could set off unburdened. She used her fastest speed to store the contents of this book into her brain.
This was a psychic power application technique she had developed herself by combining Earth’s memory palace mnemonic methods with mage psychic power.
By using a certain amount of active psychic power, she could construct a dedicated memory space within her mind.
Each time, she could expend psychic power to rapidly memorize knowledge and store it within the psychic power-constructed memory palace.
The more psychic power expended, the faster the memorization speed.
When needed, she could simply retrieve the information from the memory palace to review.
At her level of psychic power, this method could achieve near-photographic memorization of everything her eyes saw.
However, this type of memory was not the deep, thorough understanding that came from careful reading. When recalling information afterward, she might not immediately retrieve the corresponding knowledge—she had to use her psychic power to open the memory palace and search for it.
The memory palace technique was less convenient to apply than knowledge gained through careful, attentive reading, but its memorization speed was first-rate.
At her level of psychic power, she could memorize things the instant her eyes saw them.
Afterward, she only needed to take the knowledge from the memory palace and review it once to convert it into deep memory in her mind, readily recallable and applicable at any time.
Even with this extraordinarily thick book, Mo Lan was confident she could flip through it within an hour, without delaying her search for the dormitory.
Samantha had returned to her reclining chair and was teasing her mynah bird, trying to calm her excitement.
The founder of the Dawn Society, the card Sorceress Lady Moira, had become her junior! And she was reading the Imperial Magic Academy’s enrollment guide!
*Flip~*
*Flip~*
*Flip~*
Samantha froze, then turned to look, her expression gradually filling with confusion.
Flipping a page in less than a second—could she actually read like that? Was she just casually skimming?
*Flip~*
*Flip~*
Mo Lan’s page-turning speed was remarkably steady. Whether the page was dense with text or filled with illustrations, she would glance at it once and flip past.
Samantha was certain now—this wasn’t casual skimming. She really did seem to be looking at every page; she just only looked at each page for a moment.
She was flipping through the book so earnestly that Samantha felt too embarrassed to interrupt.
She checked the time. It was only nine o’clock.
“It’s fine if the Elder Sorceress wants to read the book this way. She can flip through the whole thing first and come back to read the first two chapters later,” Samantha consoled herself.
An hour later, Mo Lan closed the book.
The moment the flipping sounds stopped, Samantha immediately perked up and looked toward Mo Lan, only to find her sitting with her eyes closed, resting?
Mo Lan had stored the entire 《New Student Guide (Ancient Mage Edition)》 into her memory palace, then opened the memory palace again to review the first two chapters of the book, thoroughly converting them into deep memory. Only then did she open her eyes.
The moment she opened them, she met a pair of violet-red eyes.
“Senior?”
Mo Lan was puzzled. Samantha was even more puzzled.
What was going on with the Elder Sorceress?
“Senior, I’ve finished reading. I’m going to head off to find my dormitory now,” Mo Lan said. Then, remembering the slip of paper Samantha had tucked inside earlier, she pulled it out and slipped it into her pocket. “I don’t need the book anymore. I’ve memorized it all.”
“???” Samantha wondered if the mynah bird’s squawking had damaged her hearing. “What did you say?”
“Memorized it all~” “Memorized it all~”
“Memorized it all~”
……
The mynah bird screeched loudly.
“Shut up!” Samantha now knew she hadn’t misheard. She stared at Mo Lan in astonishment. “You memorized all of it?”
Mo Lan nodded. “It’s a little psychic power application technique I developed myself. Want to learn it, senior?”
“Can I?” Samantha asked.
“Of course… I’ll teach it to you for the low price of 100 credits, but you can’t teach it to anyone else!” Mo Lan waved her student card. “What do you say? Want to learn?”
Samantha gritted her teeth. “I’ll learn it!”
Having recruited one student counted as exceeding her enrollment quota. Combined with the reward for manning the enrollment booth, it came to a full 500 credits.
A psychic power application technique for 100 credits—totally worth it!
She too wanted to flip a page per second and astound everyone!
Watching Mo Lan deftly complete the credit transfer with her, Samantha finally believed that she really had memorized the book.
Mo Lan gave a brief explanation of how to construct a psychic power memory palace, explaining as Samantha followed along.
Samantha had been freeloading at the Imperial Magic Academy, her mage identity welded firmly in place. She had never been exposed because her innate talent for mage magic was genuinely decent, and she had seriously studied meditation techniques and had been consistently training her psychic power.
It was just that her mage magic studies were a bit rough—anything she could fake using Witch Magic as a substitute, she did.
Her advanced mage status was only hollow when it came to magic, which was at most at the Intermediate level. But her psychic power was the real deal—genuinely Advanced-level mage psychic power.
She had also noticed that the more active psychic power one had, the better one’s memory and learning ability became.
But it was nowhere near as extreme as Mo Lan’s level, which was comparable to the Speed-Memorization Spell.
She had always been interested in psychic power. Psychic Magic was the subject she had studied most seriously among all her mage disciplines. The psychic power application technique Mo Lan described held enormous appeal for her.
However, an advanced mage’s psychic power didn’t seem to be quite enough. She couldn’t construct a full memory palace the way Mo Lan described at all. She barely managed to mobilize a portion of her psychic power and built a mini memory hut.
“A mini memory hut works too—it just has lower storage capacity. After storing a bit of information, you need to make sure to review it promptly,” Mo Lan said. “Give it a try first! Channel your psychic power into the memory palace, relax your mind, and let it help you collect and organize the knowledge.”
She was actually quite impressive already. Mo Lan had also taught this method to Lilith, Vasida, and Sylph, and they could barely manage to stack a single brick for a memory palace wall.
Samantha grabbed the book she had been using as a face cover while sleeping and began flipping through it.
She activated all her active psychic power, but her memory hut worked like a sluggish old person, slowly and laboriously collecting the knowledge.
One page, then another. After roughly five pages, the side effects of excessive psychic power consumption began to set in, and the mini memory hut was already bursting at the seams.
She hastily stopped memorizing.
She checked the time. Half an hour had passed.
She rubbed her temples. “So exhausting! But it really does seem to work!”
The book was very profound, the kind that always made the reader drowsy, yet it had to be read. It was also a book related to psychic power, and Samantha had been deeply troubled by it.
She hadn’t expected that in just half an hour, she had managed to commit all that content to memory.
