Chapter 562 – Chef Star Rating
by spirapiraChapter 562 – Chef Star Rating
“Moira! You’re finally here!” Vasida came flying over from the cluster of buildings on Delicacy Island, riding her broom.
Mo Lan looked at the multicolored scales she wore, glittering in the sunlight. “So that’s your dragon-scale armor? It looks far more dazzling than it did in photos.”
Vasida hopped onto her flying carpet and spun around, showing off her dragon-scale armor. “Right?! The only problem is I haven’t defeated enough dragons yet — the dragon scales I’ve won are only enough to make a half-body set of armor.”
“As expected of the monstrous-strength Witch Vasida, who can shatter dragon scales with her bare hands!” Mo Lan said. “I’ve heard legends about you all the way in Moon Harbor.”
“That must have been spread by the Dragon-kin and Dragon servants who came ashore to shop… It’s really not that impressive. When I fight dragons, it’s always pure hand-to-hand combat without using magic. If I actually used magic, I might not necessarily win…”
Vasida’s words were humble, but the upturned corners of her mouth betrayed her.
Clearly, she was now quite confident in her physical strength as well.
“What about magic? How’s your Witch Magic coming along? Once your Witch Magic level is high enough, its power shouldn’t be any less than dragon-tongue magic! And it’s more versatile too.” Mo Lan asked, already knowing the answer.
Vasida was bound to a Status Card, so Mo Lan could check her magic proficiency at any time through the Book of Cards.
Compared to her rapidly growing physical strength, her progress in magical ability was rather underwhelming.
Currently, she had only reached Peak level in a mere one or two spells.
Even without superhuman memory, this rate of magical learning was still far too slow.
Vasida felt a twinge of guilt — she had indeed been slacking on her magic studies for quite some time.
Mo Lan sighed and reminded her:
“Are you planning to abandon the limitless advantage of a Sorceress’s All-Element Magic talent, and focus solely on cultivating your Devouring Stomach to enhance your physical strength, using hand-to-hand combat as your primary fighting method?
A single punch can shatter the hardest dragon scales in the world, but a single punch can’t take down a whole group of small fry at once!
Don’t forget — the Dragons are just as famous for their dragon-tongue magic as they are for their physical prowess. If they only had powerful bodies, they could never have ranked among the strongest races in Valen. A true powerhouse shouldn’t have any weaknesses.”
“I understand!” Vasida hurriedly said. “I’ve actually been looking for ways to integrate magic into my physical combat system lately.”
Knowing that Vasida had this on her mind, Mo Lan finally felt reassured. “In that regard, the Dragons are the foremost experts. I’ll keep an eye out for any relevant legacy information for you.”
“Mm!” Vasida breathed a sigh of relief.
She wasn’t sure why, but just now she had felt the kind of nervousness she used to get taking exams back in school.
To lighten the mood, she quickly began introducing the layout of Delicacy Island:
“The westernmost part of Delicacy Island, where there are no surrounding mountains, is where the docks are.
Ships used to stop here frequently. Ingredients shipped from all across Valen would be delivered to the ingredients market next door, where the island’s chefs could browse and select what they needed.
Chefs could also hire Dragon-kin and Dragon servants at the docks to go purchase ingredients for them.
But after the Dawn Society grew, the docks became much quieter. Only the ingredients market has remained bustling.
Though now, most of the stalls in the ingredients market sell ingredient-type cards exchanged from the Dawn Society using magical energy.
The ring of mountains surrounding the island has now become a dedicated landing zone for dragons. Space on Delicacy Island is limited, so all dragons transform into humanoid form on the mountains first before entering the island to enjoy their meals.
But ever since the dragons discovered those two wonderful things — gourmet cards and Communication Cards — they’ve been coming to Delicacy Island much less frequently.
When a craving hits, they either buy gourmet cards directly from the Dawn Society to enjoy, or use Communication Cards to contact the relevant chef, place an advance order, and then just show up when it’s ready.”
“No wonder I’ve been feeling like the island is a bit quiet!”
So far, Mo Lan had only seen a single red Dragon come to the island. It was completely different from what she had read about in books — scenes of multicolored dragons taking off and landing, ships coming and going, and lesser dragon-beasts hauling cargo.
“What’s that place?” Mo Lan pointed at the domed building in the center of the island.
The buildings on Delicacy Island varied in style and form, but they all occupied roughly the same amount of space.
Basically, each was a two-story house with a small courtyard.
Only the domed building in the center stood notably taller — clearly a landmark structure.
“That’s the restaurant of Delicacy Island’s founder, the brass Dragon Krotack, and it also serves as the chef qualification assessment center.
Once Krotack certifies you as a star-rated chef, he’ll send servants to help you settle into the island’s chef community.
Whether you want to build your own preferred residence on an empty plot or move into an existing vacant house, either option is fine.
The higher a chef’s star rating, the better the benefits.
Skilled chefs can absolutely earn magical resources here through their culinary craft.
Krotack guarantees the rights of the island’s chefs, though chefs on Delicacy Island cannot refuse to serve dragon diners without good reason, nor can they leave Delicacy Island on their own.
Of course, those rules apply to chefs of other races. Culinary Witches here can choose their own clients.
If they want to leave Delicacy Island, they can do so at any time.
The benefits are the same, though if a house goes unoccupied for a year, it may be reassigned to another chef.”
Mo Lan nodded as she listened. She had heard about Delicacy Island’s rules before.
The Dragons were quite generous to the chefs on Delicacy Island — the only catch was that they restricted the personal freedom of the island’s chefs.
The better your skills, the harder it was to leave.
But Delicacy Island was also the place in all of Valen that treated chefs the best.
They had even established a dedicated ranking system specifically for chefs, granting them a status comparable to that of spellcasters.
“In the Dragons’ chef rating system, what star level are you right now?” Mo Lan asked curiously.
“One star…” Vasida had once devoted herself wholeheartedly to studying Culinary Magic and recipes, hoping to become a Culinary Witch who could at least fill her own stomach.
But unexpectedly, Mo Lan had created gourmet cards, and had also taught her how to turn her Sorceress Talent ability into Trash Can Cards.
Gourmet cards satisfied her appetite.
Trash Can Cards not only earned her a considerable amount of Mana, but as the Dawn Society grew, they also kept the Devouring Stomach fed.
So she had put much less effort into her cooking.
“The Dragons’ chef rating standards are extremely strict.
Actually, when I first came here, based solely on the quality and tastiness of the dishes I cooked, I was still a small distance away from one-star chef status.
But fortunately, I’m a Witch and excel at Culinary Magic, so my cooking speed was quite impressive — that’s what got me the one-star chef certification.
You know Iris, right? She came to Dragon Isle right after graduating and has been specializing in culinary magic. After all these years, she’s only just managed to pass the three-star chef certification.”
