Chapter 606 – Are You Sure?
by spirapiraThe Hermits knelt prostrate on the ground, gazing up at the Angel with faces full of reverence, yet the Angel never once lowered his gaze to look at them. His objective perfectly clear, he strode toward the Candy Coin exchange.
The Hermit standing at the entrance immediately stepped aside.
The Angel swept his palm through the air, and a beam of golden light fell upon the door handle, opening the door for him.
Once inside the room, he stopped before the desk where Mo Lan sat. He glanced at the chair but did not sit down, instead producing a thick stack of Gem Coin Cards and tossing them onto the desk. “Exchange all of these for Candy Coins.”
Mo Lan quietly set up a psychic illusion while answering him. “Each person can only exchange a maximum of 30 Candy Coins per day.”
“I am not human.” The Angel looked down at Mo Lan from above.
“Same rule for Angels.”
Inside the illusion, Mo Lan picked out a single Gem Coin Card worth 30 Gem Coins from the stack he had brought, then counted out thirty Candy Coins one by one from the box.
In reality, the Angel’s gaze had gone blank, and he stood there in a daze. Mo Lan rose on her tiptoes and pressed her finger against the spot between his brows. Psychic power surged into his mind as she rapidly copied his memories.
Once the copying was complete, the illusion began merging with reality. Mo Lan pushed the Candy Coins toward him. “That’s all there is. If it’s not enough, come back tomorrow!”
The Angel’s expression grew even colder. “I don’t have time to come here every day to buy candy. Or I could use these cards to purchase potions with the same magical effects as the candy in your shop. That would also be acceptable.”
“That won’t work either.” Mo Lan continued shaking her head, having perfectly mastered the Hermits’ attitude of ‘everything is for your own good.’ “Too much candy is bad for your health.”
These words were originally just an excuse conceived from a human perspective to placate customers, but for the Angel, they were actually true.
Candy could make Angels feel happiness, but it would suppress their rate of growth.
On the Angel’s cold face, a flicker of conflicted emotion appeared.
Reason told him that he really should eat less candy, but emotion told him that he needed these sweets.
He was no longer a freshly hatched little Angel — he couldn’t eat too much candy and delay his advancement.
And yet, he wasn’t far from advancing, and he had never before tasted magical candy that was both this delicious and capable of making him more beautiful. Once he advanced, he would no longer be able to taste the sweet flavor of happiness.
Given his long lifespan, indulging himself for a final period before advancing would be perfectly harmless.
Besides, his wings… truly did need this candy.
It was precisely because emotion had won over reason that he had walked out of the Gate of Heaven today.
And yet this shop not only had the extravagance to protect its candy with such precious Spatial Magic artifacts, and his Sprite messenger had been lost here, but they still wouldn’t let him buy more candy.
Give up? No! The more unattainable something was, the more he desired it!
Fortunately, everyone outside was already a fanatical devotee who had completely surrendered their faith to the Angels.
The Angel cast aside all hesitation. A Spatial Card appeared before him. He reached inside and drew out a scepter, channeling the full force of his angelic power to release his oppressive aura. “Are you sure you won’t sell?”
She was merely an Advanced Witch, after all. As long as he didn’t take her life, the Sorceress wouldn’t come knocking over such a trivial matter.
Mo Lan wasn’t affected in the slightest. She leaned back in her chair, crossed her left leg over her right, and looked up at him. “Are you sure you still want to ‘buy’?”
The Angel: “…”
That casual composure — her rank was definitely above his.
Why was she pretending to be an Advanced Witch when she was clearly something more!
His expression turned somewhat sour. He snatched up the Candy Coins from the desk and turned to leave. The wind from his stride slammed the door shut with a bang.
The Hermits who had been peeking through the glass windows quickly lowered their heads. In the ensuing silence, the Angel walked up to a candy machine and fed all of his Candy Coins into it.
“Welcome to the Lush & Luminous Cotton Candy machine! Please insert coins to purchase!”
“30 Candy Coins paid. Please collect your candy.”
The candy machine announced loudly.
The Hermits sneaked a glance at the Angel’s wings, which were tucked behind his back.
White powder was flaking off, and amid the snow-white feathers, glaring pink spots were visible here and there.
“So even Angels have hair loss problems!” A bald Hermit nearby who had already bought his candy felt a surge of sympathy. He boldly extended his hand. “My lord, these are for you.”
Of the thirty Lush & Luminous Cotton Candies he had bought today, aside from the one he had eaten, the remaining twenty-nine were all here.
“Not needed.” The Angel squeezed the words out through clenched teeth. He strode out of the candy shop and flew straight into the Gate of Heaven in one breath before finally letting out a sigh of relief.
“Otaros! What were you doing running off to the lower realm? Come on! Let’s duel at the Holy Arena! This time, your ranking is definitely mine!”
Otaros got a headache the moment he heard that voice. Without hesitation he turned to leave, but was blocked. He looked at the other’s wings, which bore only a sparse fuzz of tiny feathers.
“Koltama, you don’t have a single feather left to wager in a duel. If you want to fight, wait until your feathers grow back. And besides, are you really planning to attend the Lightforging Ceremony looking like that?”
“If I wait for my feathers to grow back, this Lightforging Ceremony will have already passed!” Koltama said. “Rather than waiting for feathers to regrow, it’d be better to win someone else’s feathers to adorn my wings. Yours look quite nice — snow-white and silky smooth… Hm? Why are you balding too?”
“Lost a few challenge matches against Sephidune…” Otaros said quietly.
“Sephidune? You’re that confident in your abilities!” Koltama exclaimed. “If you’re brave enough to challenge Sephidune, what are you afraid of fighting me for?”
“Who said I’m afraid to fight you! Your wings are too ugly — I’m afraid they’d hurt my eyes!” Otaros really didn’t want to fight someone with no feathers. He tossed a candy at Koltama. “Here, take this. Go bother someone else!”
Koltama caught it, puzzled. “What’s this?”
While he was busy unwrapping it, Otaros had already slipped away.
“Candy? Otaros snuck down to the lower realm to buy candy? He’s almost ready to advance, and he’s still eating candy?”
Koltama was full of disapproval, looking at the candy in his hand as though it were a sinful fruit. “Dirty things from the lower realm can’t just be thrown away anywhere!”
He looked left and right. No other Angels were around. He quickly tossed the candy into his own mouth.
“Tch! What a long-missed taste of happiness! Worthy of a magical candy infused with light elemental force! I want another one… No, no. I need to focus on accumulating power and prepare for advancement!”
Koltama flew toward the Holy Arena with a stern expression. He needed to fight a match to suppress his decadent desires.
“Hss, my wings are so itchy! Having no feathers is both ugly and uncomfortable. I really can’t eat that candy anymore — the more I eat, the more duels I lose… Hm? Why does this feel different?” Koltama turned his head to look. “Heavens! My wings! They’re beautiful~”
“Otaros! Otaros! I have feathers now! I challenge you!”
