Chapter 89 – Rewards for Everyone

    The next morning.

“Good morning, Moira! Huh? What are you doing with a broom?” Vasida looked at her in surprise.

When her gaze fell on the broom in Mo Lan’s hands, she thought she could see a faint magical halo.

Even without activating Witch Sight, her eyes could now pick up slight Traces of Energy.

But to make sure she wasn’t seeing things, she still covered her eyes with mana.

This time she saw it clearly:

“You’re really Attuning it? Attuning a broom?”

What use was a broom? Vasida almost immediately thought of the upperclassmen who flew on broomsticks.

“Moira, don’t tell me you’re teaching yourself to fly?”

Honestly, nothing Mo Lan learned would surprise her at this point.

She had simply been shocked too many times already.

“What are you thinking!” Mo Lan laughed at her. “Did you forget? One of the required reading books is 《A Guide to Cultivating Broomstick Grass》! Broomsticks are grown from plants. I don’t even have seeds—where would I grow a broomstick to learn to fly?”

“Really? Broomsticks are grown?” Vasida did have a vague impression of the book Mo Lan mentioned, but it was only a faint recollection, and she had never thought much about it. “Then your broom is…”

“This broom is just for sweeping!” Mo Lan said. “Learning the Cleaning spell requires cleaning tools. This is the broom from the {Cleaning Tools Card} I made.”

“Oh! The Cleaning spell!” Vasida nodded halfway, then asked, “When you fainted before, hadn’t you just learned the Light spell? What about the Flame spell from 《Fire, Light, and Water》? Didn’t you learn that? Why are you studying the Cleaning spell now?”

“I did learn it.” Mo Lan drew her Wand, and with a whoosh, a small cluster of flame appeared at its tip. “See? Just this little bit.”

“…” Vasida had to hand it to her. “We all fainted together and came back together. I stayed up until the early hours last night rushing to finish my essay, and you’ve already learned two spells?”

Before she had fainted, she had only just learned from Mo Lan about what was holding her back from mastering the Spring Water spell. She hadn’t even begun to try again yet!

“No, the Cleaning spell is more complex to learn. I’ve only just finished reading the book and I’m still doing the preliminary preparation work!” Mo Lan said.

Vasida didn’t even want to talk anymore.

Good thing the Cleaning spell was complex—otherwise, what she might have seen today was a Mo Lan who had already mastered it.

    “Good morning! Vasida, Moira!”

The moment Sylph emerged, both Mo Lan and Vasida turned their attention to her.

“How are things with your greenhouse?”

Yesterday, after the other young witches came down from the mountain, they had all gone back to the dormitory to do homework and tidy up their rooms.

Only Sylph had taken her Wind Chime Flower and followed Bi’er to the greenhouse the Academy had assigned to her.

“Great!” Sylph said. “The greenhouse can adjust lighting, temperature, and humidity so plants can grow comfortably. Little Bell really likes it there. The Headmistress also installed all kinds of defensive magic formations in the greenhouse, so even if the plants I’m growing have another accident, it won’t affect anything outside the greenhouse!”

“That’s good. Your Manifested Gift is definitely related to plants, and you’ll very likely cultivate all sorts of mutated plants in the future. It’s safer to do that in a greenhouse. Plus, the Headmistress sent Bi’er to help you look after the greenhouse, so taking care of the plants will be easier for you,” Mo Lan said.

    Sylph nodded.

“Bi’er has already moved into the greenhouse. It’s just that such a big greenhouse only has Little Bell as its one magical plant right now—it’s too lonely. If only I could learn Plant Magic sooner and grow more magical plants in there.”

“I think we’ll have to wait until everyone has more or less gotten the hang of Culinary Magic before they’ll start new magic classes,” Mo Lan said. “But if you want to learn, you can start reading ahead on your own!”

“…” Vasida cut in: “With all due respect, not everyone can pick things up as quickly as you, Moira!”

“I have the advantage of memories from my previous life. The recommended reading list is actually very detailed—if you read more and try things gradually, your Talents are perfectly fine. You’ll definitely be able to learn.”

Mo Lan said with certainty, “Besides, with the Headmistress secretly watching over us, now is the time to try as much as we can. We won’t have these conditions in the future! And if you really get stuck and run into problems, you can always ask the Headmistress! Though I’d recommend trying to figure things out on your own first. After all, even five years at the Academy isn’t enough to learn all the magic there is. Most of it will have to come from self-study after we graduate!”

“You’re right!” Vasida had been stung by the comparison with Mo Lan.

But thinking about it rationally, they were Sorceresses—they already had an advantage in Talent over the other young witches. What reason did they have to feel discouraged? Even if they couldn’t pick things up as instantly as Mo Lan, they had no limitations on their Talent. If they couldn’t learn something, it was only because they hadn’t studied thoroughly enough or found the right method. They had no one to blame but themselves.

“Study! Study hard! Now that I’ve gotten the hang of writing essays, I can knock out a problem summary paper in half an hour. I’ll have more time to study magic from now on!”

Vasida was brimming with confidence, her whole bearing transformed.

Sylph flipped through her Grimoire. “Is the book on planting magic this one— 《A Few Things About Growing Vegetables: An Introduction to Plant Magic》?”

“That’s the one!” Mo Lan had long since memorized all the required reading for the first year.

Though she hadn’t had time to read every book cover to cover, she had at least skimmed the foreword of each one and had a general idea of what each book covered.

Influenced by the three of them, the other young witches also began thinking about using their spare time to study other magic in advance.

After all, they were all experienced essay writers by now.

Just play the recording card, transcribe it onto paper, polish it up a little, and that was that.

But when they arrived at the theory classroom, their upbeat and ambitious mood came to an abrupt halt at Lady Amisha’s words:

“Starting today, the format of theory class will change.

“The pre-class self-reading of textbook content is being eliminated. It will be replaced with workbook review sessions.

“You will need to complete the reading of the next lesson’s textbook material on your own before class, and finish the corresponding pre-reading exercises in the workbook.

“During class, we will go directly into reviewing the workbook exercises.

“Afterward, you may ask questions about any textbook content you still find confusing.

“I will answer each one and recommend the relevant reference books.

“Homework will change from the classroom problem summary essay to the workbook’s corresponding review exercises.

“Every month, we will hold a short quiz on theory class material.

“It will serve as an assessment of the theory knowledge covered that month.

“Those with outstanding scores and those who fail will both receive rewards.

“Now I will distribute the workbooks for Fundamentals of Magic Theory, 《History of Witches》, and 《Continental History》.

“These will be collected and checked every class session. Do not copy them into your Grimoires.”

    The young witches: “…”

Wait—they had just gotten the hang of writing essays, and now the homework was changing?

What were workbooks? And what were exams?
